What’s on
the desk?

The Jester ML 48 combines conventional dimmer control with fixture control. Its exact setup depends on how the school has patched and configured the rig.

01

Channel faders

Control the output level of conventional channels, or the parameters assigned to a fixture. A fader only controls what the patch and current mode assign to it.

02

Fixture buttons

Select intelligent fixtures before adjusting their attributes. The fixture buttons have pages, so check the desk display and page before assuming a button selects a particular light.

03

Wheels & palettes

Use the control wheels for fixture attributes such as position, colour or beam. Palettes can recall prepared looks quickly when the show has them programmed.

04

Playback masters

Masters can run recorded scenes, submasters or a sequence. Know which playback the operator expects before raising a fader during a show.

05

Grand Master

The Grand Master scales the overall lighting output. If the desk looks active but the stage is dark, check it before changing fixture values.

06

Blackout

Blackout cuts the desk’s lighting output. Check its indicator and state before troubleshooting a dark stage. Confirm with the show caller before using it live.

02 / OPERATOR HABIT

“Know the cue.
Then touch the desk.”

Before the audience comes in, check the correct show file, confirm the rig is patched as expected, and rehearse the cues with the caller. Don’t experiment in a live show.

03 / TOP THINGS TO KNOW

Keep the
show steady.

Make the console predictable. Small checks at the start prevent big surprises during a cue.

01 Ask which mode and show file are in use before adjusting anything.

02 Confirm the Grand Master is up and Blackout is off when the rig should be live.

03 Know what each playback fader runs; label the show plan if labels are missing.

04 Keep changes deliberate. Move one control, watch the stage, then decide what to do next.

05 Save a copy of a show file before editing. Follow your teacher’s patch and power-up routine.
